What is an Environment Databases? An Environment Database is a data representation of the environment in which the user of a computer application is immersed. It has no connection to the conventional understanding of a database, such as an Oracle DBMS or Excel spreadsheet Why are multiple databases produced for the same geographic area? The design and content of environment databases have traditionally been constrained by the hardware and software of the image generator devices on which they run. This has resulted in a specific build of the database being required for each device. This no longer needs to be the case, as improved hardware and software plus the establishment of database standards make the sharing of environment databases a reality. Why are the same locations in two different environment databases not always the same?A location defined by values of latitude, longitude and height is dependent on a number of factors, including the ellipsoid representing the shape of the Earth and the height datum. A method for the unambiguous spatial referencing of locations and directions is defined by the Spatial Reference Model (SRM). Further information can be obtained by contacting dataSim. Why should environment databases be inter-operable?The benefit for the end user is that a single environment database can be re-used on another simulation system. The benefit for the database supplier is that components of existing databases can be re-used to generate new environment databases. For both user and supplier, inter-operable environment databases provide cost benefits. Why hasn't the mandating of database standards solved the interoperability problem? When environment databases were constrained by the capabilities of image generators, radar landmass generators and other simulator devices, it was not possible to define a "one size fits all" standard. Advances in technology have significantly reduced these constraints, making the use of standards a viable option. OpenFlight® is already well established as a standard format for 3D models. Standards are now available that address all aspects of environment databases. For more information, contact dataSim. Do standards for Environment Databases have any value?Standards are an essential part of achieving inter-operable environment databases and the resulting cost benefits.
